The Huddle

Sockeye 5 — Johnny Bravo 5

The Huddle: After two huge plays by Whit, what impact does strong momentum factor on the entire team?

Andrew Fleming: On the first possession the offensive flow moves immediately to the downwind line. Sockeye is able to make progress up the field, but Bravo does a good job of keeping them pinned to that sideline. Just as Bravo struggled to score from that corner earlier, Sockeye runs out of room and into trouble. The momentum has clearly swung to Bravo at this point. They have proven that they use their athleticism to score the big upwinders, and now need only trade out the half to pick up an extra break.

Mike Whitaker: The tactic to note in this clip on both hucks is how to go to the "backside" of a huck when you are the second or third offensive player involved. Rarely does it benefit an offense to send multiple players to the point where the huck "should" come down as they are likely to interfere with each other or go up too early. On a floating huck, if you are not the primary receiver, look to go to the far side of where the receivers are lining up to catch the huck and be prepared to catch it if they misread or go up early. Particularly in this situation with a cross wind, Whit stays on the downwind sideline the entire time while 5 players track the disc from the middle of the field. By staying on the backside, Whit has the best angle to make a play on the disc as it drifts over the pack of players.
