The Huddle

Round 3

by Andy Lovseth

By early afternoon, the tournament began rolling out some of the marquee matchups. The first of which was the third round game between Furious and Revolver. For the first half, each team played the other tight. Revolver seemed to focus on shutting down the downfield Furious cutters. Giving away neither the in nor the out—playing as close as possible—with a hand on their defenders, Revolver sufficiently flustered the Furious offense. They were available to force impatient throws and get a couple turnovers.

The game was on serve, 7-6 Furious. Following halftime, the Furious D kicked up a notch. They immediately broke Revolver to go up 8-6. Then, they immediately lost their momentum. A wayward pull gave Revolver the disc on their goal line. Revolver punched it in, to get back within one.

Unlike the Rhino zone offense, Revolver was able to successfully maneuver around the junky Furious zone. They quickly moved the disc from one side to the other, spread the field, and found shots over the top of the front line of the zone.

But for all of their well-executed strategy, Revolver was unable to capitalize on Furious turnovers and get a break. In fact, Revolver was unable to force a break the entire second half. And down a break, plus another they gave up at 9-7, Revolver would not be able to comeback and take the win. Furious capped the game with a final break, winning 13-10.

The next field over gave the tournament one of the largest surprises of the weekend. PoNY was taking it to Sockeye. PoNY's offense caught the fish unaware—their fast (really fast) cutters blew by the Sockeye D and caught score after score. At half, the New York squad was up 7-5.

And they didn't let up there. They kept striking and continued to put the pressure on, keeping Sockeye on their heels. They kept the lead the whole way. Until they didn't. Up 12-11, PoNY blinked, and Sockeye took full advantage. Sockeye found their swagger on D, came up with plays, and put in two straight goals. Sockeye stole a victory, and PoNY let them.

The other game of the round pitted the Condors against Rhino. The Condors came out on top, 13-9, and gave them what turned out to be their only victory of the weekend.
