The Huddle

Round 4

by Andy Lovseth

The next round had another anticipated matchup between (arguably) the two best teams of the decade, Furious and Sockeye. From the beginning it looked like Furious had abandoned their junky zone defense after Revolver had found their way past it. Instead they relied on big, physical marks to take away easy throws from the Sockeye handlers. Notwithstanding their new tactics, the reigning UPA champions found their way to the endzone.

Sockeye took an early break at 3-1, but Furious got it back, evening up the score at 3-3. Sockeye found more success in throwing a transition zone, stopping Furious' set plays after the pull. Before half they took another break, going up 6-4. The teams traded points to make the score 7-5 Sockeye at the break.

In the second half, Furious would need to ratchet up the defense, force turns, and have their defense score. Sockeye's patience and consistency on O didn't allow very many oppurtunities for Furious to make a move. Furious got the first break of the second half, to tie the game at eights.

With the cap approaching, and Sockeye up 9-8, Furious needed a goal to tie the game at nines and get to double-game-point. Unfortunately, they let Sockeye have the disc, and gave up one last break. Final score: 10-8 Sockeye.

In what may amount to the biggest upset of the weekend, Voodoo took down the historically strong Condors. The Seattle team was more consistant with their deep game, and was able to convert their D's into breaks. The final score was 13-11.

Meanwhile PoNY found more success against Rhino. They forced turns and took advantage. 13-10 New York.
