The Huddle

Round 7

by Andy Lovseth

Heading into the final round, there was a chance that the Finals' participants would be decided by a sudden death playoff. If Revolver beat Sockeye by four points, the teams would meet again directly after the last round in a short, three-point game. From the beginning, though, it was clear that the game was going to be close the whole way, and that this was going to be best game of the weekend.

The first half was dominated by each team taking advantage of deep shots that the other was unable to stop. On defense, Revolver attempted to play even with the Sockeye cutters, not taking away the under or the away. Sockeye found ways to get open and hucked at will. On offense, Revolver found their deep shots early and often. Sockeye's transition D was ineffective and was unable to pick up the deep cutters, or adjust their marks to take away the big throws.

The first thirteen points played out on-serve. Revolver had a small handful of turnovers, but Sockeye was unable to convert on D. The Sockeye offense was perfect for the first half, with no turnovers.

The second half was a different story. After scoring their O point, Revolver took advantage of a Sockeye drop in the endzone. Without fear, the Revolver defensive O took a deep shot and connected. Fifteen points into the game, Revolver had the first break.

The teams traded points until 11-11. On that point, Revolver forced a bad throw down the line, Sockeye got the D and they hit Alex Nord deep immediately. Back on serve, 12-11, and game point, Sockeye took advantage of a missed Revolver huck to a handler who was switched and mismatched downfield. Methodically, Sockeye worked the disc toward their endzone, taking a timeout, and put in the final goal. With two breaks at the end, Sockeye won the game 13-11 and punched their ticket to the finals.

One field over Furious was handling the Condors. Furious went up 5-0, smothering the Condor O with their zone defense. As soon as the Condors began to move the disc quickly, at stall count -1 or 0, they found success getting downfield. Unfortunately the Santa Barbara crew was unable to find themselves in the endzone with the disc. Furious breezed through the round, up 7-2 at half, winning 13-5. Furious would meet Sockeye in the finals for a rematch from the day before.

Two fields down PoNY was completing a successful West Coast trip. Their fast moving offense looked to be too much for the Voodoo defense, winning 13-9. PoNY finished the tournament at .500 with wins over Voodoo, Rhino, and the Condors, and Voodoo ended up a surprising 2-4, with wins over Rhino and the Condors.
