Germany Und Bavaria: A Rich History
by Rü Veitl
How long has your country had Ultimate?
30 years, but when I started the level was very low.
Does your country currently have:
Leagues? How many? How many people play in them?
Nationals is played in 2 weekend tournaments. No Summer leagues though. Not enough players.
Club Teams? How many? Are there dominant club teams?
60 club Open teams and 20 club Women's teams. Munich has three club teams which usually all end up among the top 5-6. Mainz and Hamburg also have a good team.
University or College teams? How many?
None, really.
Youth (under 18-years-old) teams? How many?
There aren't any teams, but youth programs just started/kicked in. German boys won EUC2007!
A National administration for Ultimate?
Yes. Run by all volunteers.
Where or how do most people learn about the game?
Through friends and teammates—very few programs—none on a high level.
Where do most people play?
In clubs.
Do people in your country play in or against other countries?
Yes, a lot!
Have there been individuals that have been major contributors to the growth of Ultimate in your country? Who are they? What did they do that helped the game grow so well?
Not really—we have a few people without which Ultimate would be poor in Germany (mostly organizational stuff). It is very hard to find volunteers and coaches.
Rü is a 20-year veteran of German Ultimate, and one of the top players on the continent. He currently works with WFDF and leads the German National Team, as well as the Woodies (the only European team ever to win a major North American tournament) and Sexxxpensive (a Paganello favorite).
